BEAUTIFUL LAKE ONTARIO | SOAP
BEAUTIFUL LAKE ONTARIO | SOAP
$9.99
I have a new soap.
I needed a name for it, and I decided to dedicate it to Lake Ontario as a small way of bringing attention to the history behind its name and the Indigenous history of the region.
The lake has been here long before Canada became a country in 1867, and long before the United States declared independence in 1776. Its name has Indigenous roots that go back centuries.
It is Lake Ontario now, and it will continue to be Lake Ontario.
Lake Ontario is the smallest of the five Great Lakes by surface area. It is the last lake in the Great Lakes chain. Water from the upper Great Lakes eventually makes its way through Lake Erie, into Lake Ontario, then down the St. Lawrence River and out to the Atlantic Ocean.
Long before modern shipping routes existed, Indigenous peoples were already living, travelling, trading and building communities throughout this region.
The name Ontario has Indigenous roots. The Government of Canada traces the name to the Iroquois word kanadario, meaning “sparkling” water. The earliest recorded use of the name Ontario was in 1641, when it was used to describe a land area on the north shore of the easternmost part of the Great Lakes.
1641 — Ontario is recorded
1776 — United States declares independence
1867 — Canada becomes a country
Names carry history. This one carries a lot.
I named this soap Beautiful Lake Ontario as a small reminder of the long story behind the lake’s name — a name that existed centuries before our modern borders.
I make this soap in Ottawa, Ontario, with plant-based ingredients.
The scent is gently bright and clean: lemongrass, lavender and bergamot essential oils. You notice it while washing, but it doesn’t linger after you dry off.
The lather is thick and creamy. It cleans well and leaves skin feeling comfortable.

Keep it dry between uses and it'll last well over a month — handmade bars are denser than commercial ones.
Because every bar is made by hand, yours will be one of a kind. Size, colour, and pattern vary slightly — that's the point.
